Mercedes-Benz Concept BlueZERO

BlueZERO E-CELL Plus, essentially a series hybrid, has
a range of about 100 kilometers (62 miles) from its plug-in battery
pack; when the batteries run out, a rear-mounted 1.0-liter 3-cylinder
gasoline engine—the same powerplant in the Smart Fortwo—fires
up and acts like a generator, running at a constant 3500 rpm to feed a
continuous stream of 50 kw (67 bhp) to the electric motor to keep the
car going. Total range on a single tank: 600 kilometers (373 miles)
before juicing up again either at the pump or the plug.

2009 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid Overview

New for 2009 the Cadillac Escalade Hybrid combines the luxury and presence of a Cadillac with an advanced 2-Mode power train for real fuel savings with style.

Standard equipment includes Magnetic Ride Control, 22-inch chrome wheels, power liftgate, remote start, Bluetooth compatibility, and a rear-view camera. Available as a 4x2 or 4x4 the Escalade Hybrid 2-mode hybrid system conserves energy by using an electrically variable transmission, a 300-volt storage system and a 332-hp 6.0L Vortec V8 engine with Active Fuel Management. The nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) battery includes an 8 year/100,000 mile warranty.

2009 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid Overview

The highly anticipated Chevy Malibu Hybrid made its debut in 2008 utilizing GM's "mild hybrid system" which uses a belt-alternator starter (BAS) to assist the gas engine.

The 2009 Chevy Malibu Hybrid is built on the same platform as the Saturn Aura Green Line, which also has a hybrid option. The hybrid Malibu uses a 36-volt electric motor/generator coupled with a 164-hp 2.4L Ecotec VVT four-cylinder engine and a four-speed transmission to provide seamless operation to drivers. Fuel consumption is reduced by using sophisticated controls and software to stop and start the engine in heavy traffic and to recharge the battery by regenerative braking. The nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) battery is covered by an eight year, 100,000 mile warranty. Standard safety features include front, side-impact, and side curtain airbags, stability control, and traction control.

The Chevy Malibu Hybrid features a hybrid drivetrain, an EPA rating of 24-mpg city and 32-mpg highway, and is a carryover for 2009.

Volkswagen will bring the Polo to America

With American consumers showing an increasing taste for small cars like the MINI, Honda Fit and others, Volkswagen apparently wants to return to its roots. VW development chief Ulrich Hackenberg confirmed during the Detroit Auto Show that the next-generation Polo will be sent to the U.S. As the Rabbit/Golf has continually grown through its first five generations, the car has left a gap in VW's U.S. lineup where the original Rabbit sat. That's where the Polo comes in.

The Polo is roughly the same size as that original Rabbit and would slot in between the Toyota Yaris and Honda Fit. The new generation Polo will debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March but a U.S. launch date hasn't been confirmed yet. We'll likely see the Polo at U.S. auto shows later this year, probably starting at the LA Auto Show in November. U.S.-market Polos will reportedly be sourced from VW's Puebla Mexico factory.

Volkswagen looks into its crystal ball, sees zero-emissions in 2028

Apparently, Volkswagen thinks its time for another weird and wacky look into the future. This time, the German automaker is gazing just twenty years ahead. The results of its future look are three virtual concept cars. Yes, all three are capable of driving themselves, as you would likely imagine. As would be expected of any self-respecting gaze into the future, petroleum is not part of the picture. In its place are biofuels for those who simply must have liquid fuels and, of course, electricity. We feel pretty confident that these projections are possible, but that's right about where any semblance to reality ends.

After taking a leisurely stroll through the über clean park, a father and his son are reminded that it is time to leave by a hologram. What car to have delivered? The VW One wouldn't do, as it only seats a single occupant. The VW Room is overkill, as it is intended for an entire family. So, the son chooses to summon an Ego, a two-seater sportscar concept complete with user-defined green flames.

New range of small eco cars coming from KTM

KTM, the Austrian maker of some of the world's finest dirtbikes, is currently on a new product blitz which covers nearly every niche in both the automotive and motorcycle markets. While the company is currently rolling out new streetbikes, like the awe-inspiring RC8 superbike, the firm's first-ever four-wheeler, the X-Bow, has been generating tons of buzz amongst automotive gear-heads which would likely otherwise be uninterested in the orange and black brand. That newfound audience will soon be greeted by "the world's first frugal and eco-friendly off-roader" and a small city car, which could even see electric-only power at some point.

10 Cars That Get More Than 40 MPG

1. Toyota Prius

The Toyota Prius is still the reigning mileage champ in the U.S., earning an EPA rating of 45 mpg highway, 48 mpg city for 2009.

The Toyota Prius is the reigning champion for fuel efficiency in the U.S., and has been since 2007, when the Honda Insight hybrid was put to sleep. The Environmental Protection Agency rates the 2009 model at 45 mpg highway, 48 mpg city. This kind of efficiency is achieved by pairing up a gasoline engine with an electric motor and a large storage battery. In addition to saving you lots of dough at the pumps, the Prius ranks as one of Consumer Reports' most reliable cars. In fact, three of the six most reliable family cars are hybrids (the Prius, Camry and Nissan Altima).

2. Honda Civic Hybrid

The gas-electric Civic delivers 40 mpg in the city and 45 mpg on the highway.

Like the Prius, the hybrid Honda Civic has an electric motor that shares the work of the gasoline engine. Though not quite as miserly as the Prius, the gas-electric Civic still reaps a respectable 40 mpg in the city and 45 mpg on the highway, according to EPA tests.

3. Ford Fiesta ECOnetic

Ford's ECOnetic Fiesta packs a 1.6-liter Duratorque turbodiesel engine that offers more than 60 mpg.

If you were to drive Ford's snappy little Fiesta ECOnetic, you might easily find yourself spending less for fuel each week than you do for coffee. It employs a clean, efficient 1.6-liter Duratorque turbodiesel motor and low-drag body design to achieve a combined city/highway fuel-economy rating of 63.6 mpg, based on European Union standards.

Ford says that importing the Fiesta ECOnetic from Europe, where it's made, would be too pricey and wouldn't be met with enough demand. Modern diesel engines deliver roughly 30 to 35 percent higher fuel efficiency than gas-powered engines, and are often just as clean as hybrids. The problem is that diesels must meet the most stringent emissions standards in the world to be sold here in the U.S., and thus automakers are reluctant to go through the costly process of modifying them to be greener and bringing them into a market that is simply lukewarm on diesel power. Folks, diesel is no longer the dirty bird of fossil fuels. We need to give them a closer look.

4. Mercedes-Benz C 250 CDI

The Mercedes-Benz C 250, part of the BlueEfficiency diesel line, offers up 45 mpg and a top speed of 155 mph.

Getting past the 40 mpg mark doesn't have to leave you yawning, as evidenced by the Mercedes-Benz C250 BlueEfficiency. According to Mercedes, the C250 can get 45 miles from a gallon of diesel and has a top speed of 155 mph. It also features a slick, luxurious interior and an impressive features package. In addition to the specially designed 2.2-liter diesel powerplant, the C250 BlueEfficiency boosts its mpg with features such as an electric power-steering motor that deactivates when not needed, and a 7-speed automatic transmission that decouples when the car is in idle.

5. Smart fortwo

The fortwo CDI makes the efficient smart car even smarter. The diesel version delivers more than 70 mpg.

As tiny as it is, the smart fortwo available in the U.S. earns an EPA combined fuel economy of only 36 mpg. Over the Canadian border and across the pond in Europe, smarts are sipping diesel fuel to the tune of 70 mpg.

We're afraid not. The diesel fortwo doesn't yet meet U.S. emissions standards. Passionate patriots have struggled unsuccessfully to bring these diesel-powered mites down from the Great White North, and saddened Canadians have had to leave theirs behind at the border. To make American green-car enthusiasts even more jealous, smart is beginning the release of an electric fortwo in Germany. Learn to love diesels, folks. Lawmakers should look closely at this list, too, when they are deciding how to reduce our carbon footprint.

Volvo comes up with the ReCharge Concept

Finally, Volvo has come up with a hybrid. The ReCharge concept is a plug-in hybrid, with individual electric motors given to each wheel. ReCharge is a specially designed C30, prepared for the Frankfurt Motor Show.

The car is capable of running 100km on electric power before the 1.6-liter four-cylinder Flexifuel engine steps in to power the car and recharge the batteries as well. The Lithium-polymer battery pack is integrated in the luggage compartment.

With a capability of running 100km on electric power, Volvo believes owners of the ReCharge would rarely have to go to a filling station. Batteries of the Concept can be recharged through a standard electric outlet, and the batteries are powerful enough to light up an entire villa if the owner should need a backup!

The driver has independence to choose the source of power; he may select to drive on the batteries or the Flexifuel engine. Top speed of the concept stands at 160kmph and it takes 9 seconds to reach 100kmph from a standing start.

Tyres for ReCharge have been specially designed by Michelin to accommodate the wheel motors. With motors for every wheel, ReCharge does not need conventional transmission systems because there is no need for a gear lever. This in turn translates into lower friction and increased efficiency.
