Holden Volt 2011 Technology Works
For trips of up to 64 kilometres, Volt is powered solely by the electricity stored in its battery without using petrol or producing exhaust pipe emissions.
When the battery’s energy is depleted, a small petrol-powered engine generates electric power for the vehicle to travel hundreds of additional kilometres.
Advanced technology enables the vehicle’s battery to be charged in less than three hours on a standard 240v power outlet. Charge times are reduced if the battery has not been fully depleted.
GM estimates that compared to petrol-powered vehicles that average 7.8 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres, Volt will save motorists up to 1892 litres of fuel a year.
KIA no3 2009 Concept
This is the Kia No3 Concept, the very first Kia to be styled under the direction of ex-Audi scribbler Peter Schreyer.
The No3 is very close to a production car, with much of what you see here making the cut, except the mad glass roof and automatic sunblind. So get used to the looks, which are apparently inspired by a tiger – you can sort of see it if you squint at the feline headlights and Soul-style nostril grille, but the biggest big cat giveaway are the Tigger-esque seats.
But while the styling is fun, expect the usual dull but competent Soul chassis and 1.6-litre petrol and diesel engine line-up underneath; and a conventional metal roof to feature on the production car. Size-wise, the No3 is 4045mm long – 95mm longer than a Ford Fiesta, and 145mm longer than a Honda Jazz.
That means the No3 should be big on the inside, but it needs to be packaged brilliantly to take on the Honda, and drive really well to match the Fiesta – not easy tasks at all.

The NV200 was a striking van concept that made its debut at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show. Nissan now plans to show off the production version of the NV200 at next month’s Geneva Motor Show.
The new Nissan van is described as a light commercial vehicle that remains innovative and stylish. It is designed to offer practical commercial and family transportation, and features three-row seating and sliding doors for access to the rear.
Performance comes from a choice of two engines, one petrol and one diesel. The petrol version will be powered by Nissan’s all-aluminum 1.6L HR16 engine, as found in Micra, Note and Qashqai. The 16-valve unit develops 108hp (79kW) and is mated to a five-speed manual transmission. The diesel, also found on Note and Micra, is a Renault-sourced unit and develops 86hp (63kW) from its 1.5L of displacement.

Further demonstrating Hyundai’s commitment to reducing CO2 emissions, the Santa Fe Petrol-Electric Hybrid concept maintains the overall design of the existing Santa Fe, yet is an entirely different vehicle under the skin.
Hyundai engineers have developed a new hybrid drive system, which mates the current 2.4-litre petrol engine to a six-speed automatic transmission and a 30kW electric motor powered by lithium-ion batteries. The end result? CO2 emissions of just 148g/km and a fuel consumption figure of 44mpg.
